CE Information
Licensed insurance producers
and adjusters are required to complete a specific number of continuing
education hours in order to renew their licenses. Here is a brief
overview of the Montana CE requirements for licensed insurance producers and
adjusters:
-
Limited Lines Insurance
Producers - Must complete 5 hours of approved CE during each license
period in the areas of Insurance Law, Ethics, or Limited Lines Credit
Insurance.
-
All Other Insurance
Producers, Adjusters, and Consultants, including those licensed to sell
Title Insurance - Must complete 24 hours of
approved CE during each license renewal period.
-
Requirement for all
producers, adjusters, and consultants: At least 1 of the 5 or 24 approved hours must be on the topic of
changes in Montana insurance statutes and administrative rules.
-
Courses
must be taken in the 24 months prior to the license renewal date.
If an agent or adjuster has more than 24 months from the license issue
date until the license renewal date, CE courses taken more than 24 months
before the renewal date of the license will not count toward the CE
requirement.
-
Adjusters may take
any CE course approved for adjusters or producers.
-
Producers may take approved
courses in lines of authority for which they are not licensed. For
example, a Life and Health producer may take approved Property and
Casualty CE courses and vice versa to satisfy their biennial CE
requirement.
-
Credit is not awarded if a
course is repeated within a 2-year period. This means precisely the
same course, with the same course number. For example, if a licensee
attends an Ethics course offered by one course provider, s/he may attend
an Ethics course offered by a different course provider and receive credit
for both, so long as they are not the same exact course with the same
course number.
-
Producers who sell Long Term Care insurance must take an 8-hour
training course before selling LTC insurance and, if they sell LTC
insurance, must include at least 4 hours of CE on the topic of LTC.
-
Producer and Adjuster licenses renew every 24-months on the last day of the
month preceding the producer's birthday month. (i.e. If your
birthday is in April, your producer license will expire on 4/1.) If
your year of birth is an even year, your license will expire in even
years; if your year of birth is an odd year, your license will expire in
odd years.
